Q. What do I need to have a website for my business or organization?
There are several elements to having a site. First, you will need a good Domain Name. Next, your website will have to be designed, and the programming needed to set it up will have to be done. Once the site design and coding is complete, it will need a Web Hosting Service to house the code, pages, pictures, audio and video that you’ll be using. Finally, the site should be optimized for good placement in search engine results. Optimization is an ongoing process that includes regularly updating the site’s content.
Q. What is a Domain Name and how do I get one?
This is the name that your website will be known by, and ends in a TLD “top level domain” code like .com or .net. There are several others, but these two are the most frequently used in the U.S. Domain names are licensed annually from a “Registrar”. The Registrar business is very competitive, and some provide better reliability and service than others. PA Server Net works with several of the best registries in North America to establish and maintain Domain Names for our clients.
Q. How do you design and create websites?
The websites that we build for clients are done using WordPress, an “open source” software package that has become the most popular web publishing platform in the world. It currently powers 17% of the 1,000,000 biggest websites. “Open source” means that the software is free for our clients to use, so the only cost involved in creating a new site are for the Domain Name registration, the time we spend on setup, and the hosting service. WordPress is a data-driven Content Management System. This means all content is stored in a database, making it easy to modify both the site’s appearance and information. PA Server Net provides the training our clients need, enabling them to easily manage their site content.
Q. What is web hosting and why do I need it?
Once the site has been built, it needs to reside on a “web server”. This is a high-speed computer that fulfills browser requests for information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Your organization’s web presence actually uses several servers, a domain name server, a database server, a web server, and an email server. PA Server Net sets up all of these components and monitors them continuously for reliability, to make sure that your information is always available.
Q. What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
There are millions of websites on the Internet. Many web users go to search engine sites such as Google, Bing or Yahoo to search for the sites of businesses and organizations they want to learn about. Getting your site’s search engine listed on the first page of these sites’ search results is an important part of getting what you want from your website investment. We work with our clients to submit their completed sites to the most important search sites, and show them how to optimize pages with the information needed by search sites to properly catalog their content.
Q. How do I know my website is secure?
With the growth in website hacking over the past few years, every website is a potential target for cyber-criminals. We minimize the risk by including important security tools with each site we host. These include hardening your site by encrypting passwords and email addresses, installing a website firewall to block hackers, and providing software that enables us to back up your site regularly, so that in the event of an attack, your site can be quickly restored.
Q. What if I already have a website?
We offer complete website and email hosting solutions for individuals, small businesses, professionals and non-profit organizations. If you already have a website, we can provide competitive pricing for reliable hosting and email. If your site was built with older technology such as HTML, Flash, or Front Page, we can convert your site to the WordPress platform after we begin hosting your site. First, we migrate the existing site to our servers. Then we begin the conversion process. The original site remains active until you approve the completed redesign. Once you give us the OK, we switch your domain name to the new website. This way there is no gap in service during the transition.
